Mental Stress Linked To Heart Disease, Study Says

Research done by Dr. David S. Sheps,  published in Circulation journal , linked mental stress to heart disease.  Dr. Sheps said that mental stress is a very powerful rish factor for heart disease, comparable to what cigarette smoking or high cholesterol can affect on your heart health. He added that a chronic state of psychological stress from unreleased anger and bitterness tend to promote hardening of the arteries and raise uncontrolled blood pressure.

The study evaluated 196 participants who have heart abnormalities while they were made to believe some form of psychological stress in a hypothetical situation. The subjects were then given five minutes to vent out their anger.

Findings showed that one-fifth of angry patients had heart abnormalities as detected by the machine radionuclide angiogram. After  five years, these patients were followed up and were found to be three times more likely to die.
